Lyon Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Grief · Niakaté · Mata · Abner · AMN · Morton · Tessmann · Tolisso · Merah · Fofana · SatrianoLyon prefers to play with a vertical style that targets quick transitions, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup relies on width from the wing backs to stretch the opposition and create gaps in the middle. The team wants to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately move it toward the front three to catch the defense before they can settle.
Satriano stays between the posts to organize the back five. The defensive unit operates with a central trio consisting of Grief, Niakaté, and Mata. Niakaté and Mata act as the wide center backs to cover the spaces behind the wing backs, while Grief stays central to command the area and win aerial duels. Abner and AMN occupy the wide roles, pushing high to provide crosses and width, but they must track back to form a flat back five when the team sits deep.
The midfield functions as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Morton and Tessmann work together to shield the back line and break up play. Morton holds his position to prevent counter attacks, while Tessmann has the license to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. This pair must cover significant ground to ensure the gap between the midfield and the back three does not become too large when the team pushes up.
In the final third, Lyon uses a three man attack to pin the opposition back. Fofana leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Tolisso and Merah operate as wide attackers, with Tolisso looking to cut inside to create chances and Merah finding space on the flanks. These attackers lead the first line of the press, forcing opponents into mistakes in their own half.
One major advantage for Lyon is the ability to create wide overloads by using the wing backs and wide attackers together. When Abner and AMN push forward, they create situations where the opposition full backs are outnumbered. Additionally, the formation allows for a compact block when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders can sit deep to deny space between the lines. The speed of transition from the double pivot to Fofana allows for rapid breaks.
This 5-2-3 formation focuses on strong defensive stability and rapid counter attacking movements. It is most effective against teams that play a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
