The midfield operates as a double pivot to control the central areas. Breitner plays on the left of this duo to drive the ball forward and connect the defense to the attack. Beside him, Ballack works to shield the back three and uses his aerial strength to win second balls in the middle of the park. These two players must work hard to cover the ground between the defensive line and the front three to ensure the team stays compact.
