Nigeria focuses on being defensively solid and playing for quick transitions through a 5-4-1 formation. Omeruo and Balogun operate in the central channels to win second balls and move the ball forward. Troost-Ekong provides extra cover in the central area to ensure the team remains hard to break down. This group works to connect the defense to the lone attacker by breaking lines with direct passes.

Nigeria relies on a lone striker in Uzoho to lead the line. The attacking plan involves Uzoho holding up the ball to allow the midfield to push up. There are no wide wingers in the front line, so the width must come from Moses and Idowu making overlapping runs. The forwards must press the opposition center backs to force mistakes and hurried clearances. Every movement is designed to create space for the midfield runners to charge into the final third.

One major advantage of this formation is the extreme compactness when defending in a low block. By having five defenders and four midfielders, Nigeria can congest the central zones and prevent through balls. The team also creates wide overloads when Moses and Idowu push up simultaneously.
