Starting Lineup

Raum · Klostermann · Lukeba · Orban · Haidara · Nusa · Baumgartner · Bakayoko · Schlager · Seiwald · Gulacsi

RB Leipzig aims to dominate through high pressing and rapid transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back quickly in the final third to catch opponents out of position. The team looks to play vertically, moving from a defensive block into an attack with great speed.

Gulacsi operates between the posts to organize the back line. A central trio of Seiwald, Lukeba, and Orban forms a deep defensive block to protect the middle. Lukeba and Orban provide aerial strength and ability to cover space, while Seiwald stays central to mark runners. Raum and Klostermann act as wing backs, pushing high up the pitch to provide width and overlap in the attacking phase, while they must track back quickly to maintain the five man defense.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Haidara and Schlager work to press opponents and intercept passes before they reach the back line. Haidara uses his driving runs to move the ball forward, while Schlager helps to shield the defense and cover the gaps left by the advancing wing backs. These two players connect the defensive unit to the front three by making short passes and breaking lines.

In the attacking phase, RB Leipzig uses three forwards to stretch the opposition. Baumgartner leads the line as a lone striker, working to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Nusa stays wide on the left to cut inside and create chances, while Bakayoko operates on the right wing to provide directness. The movement of Nusa and Bakayoko creates space for the wing backs to join the attack, forcing defenders to choose between marking the wide men or the central runners.

This formation offers great tactical advantages through its ability to press high in coordinated waves. The three central defenders allow the team to sit deep when needed, creating a compact block that is difficult to break down. Furthermore, the presence of Raum and Klostermann allows for wide overloads, which can isolate Bakayoko and Nusa in one on one situations against full backs.

The 5-2-3 lineup relies on intense physical output and quick ball movement to overwhelm the opponent. It is best suited for facing teams that play with a high line or those that struggle to deal with heavy pressure in their own half.
