Iran National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Beiranvand · Pouraliganji · Cheshmi · Azmoun · Ansarifard · Jahanbakhsh · Amiri · Shojaei © · Ebrahimi · Rezaeian · HajisafiIran focuses on a heavy defensive presence and quick transitions using a 5-4-1. This formation is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before launching direct attacks. The team relies on a low block to deny space between the lines, forcing opponents to play wide and cross the ball.
Beiranvand guards the goal and organizes the defensive unit. The back line consists of three central defenders, Ebrahimi, Cheshmi, and Pouraliganji, who act as a wall to block shots and win aerial duels. Ebrahimi sits central to manage the area, while Cheshmi and Pouraliganji cover the channels. The wing backs, Hajisafi and Rezaeian, provide width and must track back deep to form a flat five when defending. They are tasked with covering the flanks to prevent crosses and can push up to support the attack.
The midfield operates in a flat line of four to provide compactness. Shojaei, the captain, sits as the single pivot to shield the back three and intercept passes. Ahead of him, Amiri and Ansarifard work to occupy central spaces and break the line with vertical passes. Jahanbakhsh operates on the left side of this midfield bank, using his ability to cut inside and carry the ball forward. This unit works to congest the middle of the pitch and force the opposition to move the ball around the perimeter.
Iran utilizes a lone striker in Azmoun to lead the line. He acts as the focal point, tasked to hold up the ball and wait for support from the advancing midfielders. The attack is built through long balls or quick switches to the wide players. Azmoun must press the opposing center backs to disrupt their build up play. The goal is to create moments where the midfielders can run past him to exploit the space behind the opposition defense.
This lineup offers several tactical advantages, most notably the ability to pack the central areas and remain very hard to break down. The presence of three central defenders makes the team dominant in the air during defensive phases. Another strength is the speed of transition when Rezaeian or Hajisafi win the ball and quickly find Azmoun or Jahanbakhsh in space. This creates immediate pressure on a retreating opponent.
The 5-4-1 formation is a defensive masterclass designed to frustrate teams that dominate possession. It is best suited for matches against superior technical opponents where Iran needs to protect the box and play on the break.
