Starting Lineup

Celtic aim to dominate through high pressing and rapid vertical transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup relies on winning the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. CCV guards the goal and manages the defensive line from deep. In front of him, Scales acts as the central anchor of the back three, providing aerial strength and organizing the unit. Murray and Trusty sit on either side of Scales to cover space and intercept passes. The wide defenders, Pusey and Ralston, push high to act as wing backs, providing the necessary width in the attacking phase. They must track back quickly to form a five man line when the team loses possession.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to control the central area. Johnston and Saraachi work to occupy the half spaces and connect the defense to the front three. Johnston drives forward to link play, while Saraachi provides cover to protect the central defenders. This duo must press hard to prevent the opposition from playing through the middle, ensuring the team remains compact.

The attacking unit uses three players to pin the opposition back. Tierney leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Inamura and Donovan occupy the wide channels as inverted wingers, looking to cut inside and create scoring chances. This front three presses in waves, forcing errors from defenders and creating quick opportunities for the team to score.

Celtic possess several tactical advantages with this formation. The use of Pusey and Ralston creates wide overloads that force opposition wingers to drop deep. By using a back three, the team maintains a solid defensive base while allowing the midfield to push up. This setup also allows for quick transitions, as Donovan and Inamura can exploit huge spaces once the ball is won in the middle third.
