Starting Lineup

HINCAPIÉ · MOSQUERA · WHITE · LEWIS-SKELLY · NORGAARD · MERINO · NWANERI · DOWMAN · TROSSARD · MARTINELLI · KEPA

Arsenal aims to dominate games through aggressive pressing and quick transitions in a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup relies on verticality to punish teams that lose control in the middle of the pitch. The Gunners want to win the ball high up the field and immediately look to break the line with direct passes to the front three.

Kepa sits between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit works as a back three with Norgaard acting as the central anchor. Hincapié provides coverage on the left side while Mosquera stays on the right to cover space. The wing backs, White and Lewis-Skelly, are tasked with providing width. White will overlap frequently to push the opposition back, while Lewis-Skelly needs to track back and tuck inside to support the central defenders when the team sits deep.

The midfield functions as a double pivot to control the center of the park. Merino sits deeper to shield the back three and break up play through physical tackles. Nwaneri plays more as a creative engine to connect the defense with the attack. This duo must work together to intercept passes and ensure the team does not get caught on the break. By sitting in these central pockets, Merino and Nwaneri allow the wing backs to push higher up the pitch.

A front three leads the charge to press the opposition defense. Trossard operates as the main man in a central role, often dropping slightly to hold up the ball or pull defenders out of position. Martinelli uses his pace and dribbling to cut inside from the left wing, while Dowman stays wide on the right to provide width. These attackers are expected to press in waves to force errors in the opponent's build up play.

This formation offers Arsenal significant strength through wide overloads when White and Martinelli double up on the flank. The team can also create numerical superiority in the middle when the wing backs tuck in to support the two midfielders. This allows for quick switches of play to isolate Dowman or Martinelli in one on one situations against a defender.

The 5-2-3 formation creates a heavy pressing presence that can overwhelm opponents in their own half. It is a lineup best suited for matches where the team wants to exploit space behind a high defensive line.
