Adopo and Prati must intercept passes and then immediately look to find the wide players. Deiola plays on the right and Zappa plays on the left to provide width and deliver crosses into the box. These four players must shift together to prevent gaps from appearing between the lines.

The attack relies on two forwards to lead the line. Felici and Borrelli work together as a strike duo to pressure the opposition defenders. They often play with one striker holding up the ball while the other makes runs behind the defense to break the line. The width provided by Deiola and Zappa allows the strikers to stay central and focus on finding space in the box. When the team loses the ball, Felici and Borrelli lead the first wave of the press.

Cagliari has several tactical advantages with this formation. The double pivot of Adopo and Prati allows the team to maintain a strong central block and win second balls. This setup also creates opportunities for wide overloads when Palestra and Idrissi move up to support Deiola and Zappa.
