Starting Lineup
Rafa · Sidney · Soeren · Yannick · Florian · Tim · Euron · Marco · Paolo · Marvin · AlessandroA heavy focus on directness and verticality defines this 4-4-2 lineup. The team aims to win the ball and hit in behind on the transition to catch opponents out of position. This formation is built to play with two banks of four that can quickly shift into an attacking quartet once possession is regained.
Rafa sits between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back four features Sidney as a defensive wing back on the right and Soeren as a defensive wing back on the left to protect the flanks. In the middle, Yannick and Florian act as the central pairing, with Florian acting as a ball playing defender to help play short from the back while Yannick focuses on being dominant in the air. They work to hold the line and ensure the distance between the defense and midfield remains tight.
The midfield relies on a single pivot with Marco acting as the anchor to shield the defense. Beside him, Tim and Euron operate as two central midfielders who press in a mid-block to win the second ball. Paolo plays as an attacking ten in the hole behind the strikers to connect the lines. Marco works to deny the pivot of the opposition while Tim and Euron drive forward with the ball to support the attack. Paolo looks to receive on the half-turn to find space between the lines.
The attack utilizes two forwards in a partnership to stretch the defense. Marvin operates as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front, while Alessandro works as a second striker in the hole to link up play. They combine in tight spaces to create runs in behind. When the team moves forward, Sidney and Soeren push up to overlap the winger, allowing Marvin and Alessandro to occupy the central defenders.
One major strength of this formation is the ability to press in coordinated waves, with the front two and the midfield four working together to squeeze the space. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when Marco or Paolo can quickly find Marvin or Alessandro. This allows the team to bypass the midfield and exploit gaps in a high defensive line.
This 4-4-2 lineup is designed to be a hard unit to break down through compactness and quick vertical movement. It is best suited for games against possession based teams where the team can sit deep and counter at pace.
