Starting Lineup

ZACK · TOM G · CALLUM · HARRY · LOU BAG · ARCHIE · HAMMO · LOGAN · JAMIE C · BEN · GEORGI

Seeking to win the ball back high up the pitch, this lineup utilizes a 5-2-3 formation. The goal is to use a high press to disrupt the opposition before they can build play. By using three central defenders and two wide players, the team can shift between a back five in defense and a three man attack when moving forward.

GEORGI sits between the lines of defense to act as the last line of protection. The defensive unit functions with a back three of ARCHIE, LOGAN, and HAMMO who defend zonally. ARCHIE acts as the central anchor to sweep behind the line, while LOGAN and HAMMO cover the spaces to the sides. JAMIE (C) operates as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, while BEN plays as a left wing back to support the flank. These wide players must track back to form a narrow defensive block when the team sits deep.

The midfield relies on a double pivot consisting of HARRY and CALLUM. These two players work to protect the center and connect the defense to the attackers. HARRY works to drive forward with the ball to break the line, while CALLUM helps to recycle possession and shield the defense. They must press in a mid-block to force a long ball from the opponent. This pair is responsible for winning the second ball to keep the pressure on the opposition.

In the final third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the defence. TOM G and LOU BAG act as wide wingers who hug the touchline to pull the opposition defenders apart. ZACK operates as a lone striker, looking to find the feet of the striker or run in behind the defensive line. The wingers aim to cut inside to create space for the wing backs to overlap. This front line is designed to press from the front and pin the last defender to create chances through quick transitions.

This formation offers several tactical advantages. The team can create wide overloads from overlapping full backs like JAMIE (C) and BEN, which forces the opposition to defend much wider areas. There is also a high level of compactness when defending because the wingers and midfielders can quickly drop to form a compact unit. This makes it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines.

This 5-2-3 lineup is built for a high pressing game that relies on quick transitions. It is best suited for facing teams that struggle to play out from the back under intense pressure.
