Starting Lineup

Arsenal focuses on a low block and rapid transition play through a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and strike quickly when the opposition loses the ball. The goal is to sit deep, remain compact, and use the width provided by the wing backs to move the ball up the pitch.

Trossard acts as the goalkeeper to oversee the defensive line. The back five consists of Nørgaard, Nwaneri, and Merino acting as the central core to defend the box and win aerial duels. Saka and Eze operate as wing backs, tasked with tracking back to help the defenders and then pushing forward to provide width. Nørgaard and Nwaneri must stay close to cover gaps, while Merino provides additional strength in the middle of the backline.

The midfield uses a flat four to control the central areas and prevent through balls. Saliba and Hincapie work in the central roles to break the line with their passing and hold the center. MLS operates on the left to press and track back, while White plays on the right to connect the defensive unit with the attack. This group must shift as a unit to block passing lanes and intercept play before it reaches the penalty area.

Kepa operates as a lone striker tasked with holding up the ball and bringing others into play. The attack relies on the movement of Saka and Eze to provide crosses from the flanks. The forwards must press the opposition defenders to force mistakes, while Kepa stays central to pin the opposition center backs. This movement allows the midfielders to push forward and support the lone striker during transitions.

This formation offers Arsenal specific advantages such as extreme compactness when defending deep in their own half. The presence of Saka and Eze allows for wide overloads during counter attacks, creating space for the midfielders to run into. By using a five man defense, the team can also isolate attackers in one on one situations when the wing backs step up to press.

The 5-4-1 formation makes Arsenal a very difficult side to break down through central play. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession and require a disciplined defensive unit to exploit on the break.
