Starting Lineup

Gio · Willem · Maarten · Fede · Timo · Merijn · Evert · Sjors · Bas · Dali · Maxie

Focusing on verticality and mid-block stability, FC Utrecht operates with a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to control the central areas of the pitch and quicken the tempo once they win the ball back. The goal is to use the extra man in the center to dominate the middle of the park and launch direct attacks.

Gio stays between the posts to command his area. Behind him, a back three consists of Fede, Bas, and Willem. Bas and Willem sit on the left and right sides of the central channel, while Fede acts as the primary anchor. This defensive unit can step up to squeeze the space or drop back to sit deep depending on the opposition. They work as a tight block to ensure no easy passes find the strikers.

The midfield is the engine of the FC Utrecht lineup, utilizing a five man unit that provides massive coverage. Maarten and Timo act as a double pivot to shield the defense and intercept passes. Ahead of them, Merijn, Dali, and Evert occupy the central spaces to connect the lines. Merijn drives forward to link play, while Dali and Evert work to break the line with through balls. This central density makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.

In the final third, the team utilizes two forwards to stretch the opposition. Maxie plays as a left striker to drift wide and create space, while Sjors operates as the right striker to hold up the ball. They press the opposition center backs in coordinated waves to force mistakes. The movement of Maxie and Sjors creates gaps for the attacking midfielders to run into as they push into the box.

This formation offers clear tactical advantages, particularly the ability to create numerical superiority in midfield. By packing the center with players like Merijn and Evert, the team can win second balls and control the tempo. Another strength is the compactness when defending, as the five midfielders and three defenders can sit in a very tight block to deny space. The width is provided by the transition speed of the midfielders shifting to the flanks.

The 3-5-2 setup is a robust way to dominate the central corridor of the pitch. It is best suited for games against teams that rely on central playmakers and want to control possession.
