Starting Lineup

Seeking to dominate the ball and overwhelm the opponent through high volume attacking, SK Rapid utilizes a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a heavy pressing game that forces turnovers deep in the opposition half. By pushing numbers forward, the team prioritizes verticality to catch the defense out of position as quickly as possible.

Hedl sits between the posts to organize the back line. Raux Yao and Cvetkovic act as the two central defenders in a very high line, meaning they must step up quickly to intercept long balls. Because there are only two defenders, they often rely on the midfield to drop back and cover the space behind them. The defensive unit works to squeeze the pitch, leaving very little room for the opponent to breathe.

The midfield engine is crowded and provides the core of this SK Rapid system. Bolla operates as a single pivot to shield the defense and break the lines with his passing. Beside him, J. Auer and Seidl occupy the left and center areas to control the rhythm. Amane pushes into the right channel to link play, while Gulliksen sits in the attacking ten role to create chances. This midfield group connects the defense to the attack by constantly moving to support the ball carrier.

In the final third, the team uses three attackers to stretch the play. Dahl stays wide on the left to provide width, while Wurmbrand operates on the right to cut inside. Antiste leads the line as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and pin the opposing center backs. The forwards press in a coordinated way, pushing the opposition toward the sidelines to win the ball back near the goal.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads by having the midfielders push into the channels. Another advantage is the high pressing intensity that can isolate wide players in one on one situations. The numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch allows the team to keep possession even when under pressure.
