Roma focuses on a compact defensive block and quick transitions through a 4-5-1. This formation is built to sit deep and wait for the right moment to strike on the break. The team looks to control the central zones while remaining hard to break down when the opposition has the ball.

Jones stands between the posts to manage the defensive line. A flat back four consists of Stohle at right back and Mitroviç at left back. Bogan and J. Whitman operate as the central defenders, where Bogan holds the right side while J. Whitman covers the left. Stohle and Mitroviç are expected to track back quickly to support the center halves when the team loses possession. The unit works together to keep the lines tight and minimize space between the defenders.

The midfield is a dense bank of five that connects the defense to the lone forward. Kurt, serving as the captain, sits in the right defensive midfield role to shield the back four and break up play. Cahill plays alongside him in the left defensive midfield position to provide extra protection. Jonah, L. Torres, and Itsuki occupy the central and left midfield slots to control the tempo and move the ball forward. These players must work hard to press the opponent and intercept passes before they reach the final third.

A lone striker, Halfman, leads the line to provide a target for long passes. Because the formation uses only one forward, Halfman must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to push up the pitch. The wingers or wide midfielders must tuck in to help the central block but also push wide to provide an outlet. The attack is built by finding Halfman or using quick passes to catch the opposition out of position.

One major advantage for Roma is the numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. Having five players in the central zone makes it very difficult for opponents to pass through the middle. The team can also use wide overloads when the full backs push up to join the midfield during transitions. This ability to stay compact when defending and then move quickly forward makes the lineup hard to play against.

This 4-5-1 formation relies on defensive discipline and a strong central block. It is best suited for games against teams that dominate possession where Roma can sit deep and exploit spaces on the counter attack.
