Starting Lineup

Molina · Cesar · Naybet M. · M. Pablo · Romero · Scaloni · Duscher · Emerson · Fran © · Djalminha · Makaay

Seeking to control the tempo through a compact midfield, Deportivo plays a 4-5-1 formation that focuses on defensive solidity and quick transitions. The lineup works to crowd the central areas of the pitch to force opponents wide before hitting them on the break. This system is built to remain difficult to break down while relying on individual quality to spark the attack.

Molina stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defense operates with a flat back four where Cesar and Naybet M. act as the central pairing. Naybet M. provides aerial strength and reliable positioning to stop direct runs. M. Pablo and Romero occupy the wide areas, with M. Pablo tasked to push up and provide width while Romero covers the space behind him. The whole defensive unit sits deep to deny space between the lines.

A dense midfield unit forms the engine room for Deportivo. Duscher and Emerson work as a double pivot to shield the defense and break up play. Fran (C), serving as the captain, dictates the rhythm from a central role with his passing range. Scaloni and Djalminha operate in the remaining central slots to link the defensive block to the forward. Djalminha uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward and break the line, while Scaloni helps to maintain the connection between the midfield and the lone attacker.

The attacking structure relies on a lone striker, Makaay, who must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to push forward. Makaay uses his movement to create space and is expected to lead the press when the ball is lost. The width comes from the midfielders pushing into half spaces or the full backs overlapping. The attack is built through quick vertical passes intended to find Makaay in isolated situations against defenders.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, including a heavy central block that makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. The presence of Fran (C) and Djalminha allows for quick ball circulation to catch the opposition out of position. By using a double pivot, the team creates a wall that protects the two center backs, making it very hard to play through the center.

Deportivo utilizes this 4-5-1 formation to remain compact and absorb pressure. It is a system best suited for facing dominant teams that rely on central penetration.
