Starting Lineup

Prioritizing defensive solidity and quick transitions, Coritiba utilizes a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents with vertical runs. The team looks to control large spaces by clogging the middle and forcing play wide.

Jairo stands between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit operates with three central defenders, including Capitão Hidalgo, who serves as the captain and provides leadership from the middle. Fedato plays as the right central defender to cover the space behind the wing back, while Nico acts as the left central defender. Tonico and Nilo function as the wing backs, pushing high to provide width but tracking back to form a five man line when the team sits deep. This group aims to stay compact and win headers or intercept passes in the final third.

The midfield relies on a double pivot to link the defense to the attack. Alex and Krüger work together to occupy the central channels, with one player often dropping deeper to shield the back three. They must work hard to intercept play and quickly find the attackers. Their main task involves winning the ball and playing forward passes to break the lines. By controlling this central area, they help Coritiba transition from a defensive block to an attacking unit.

Coritiba employs three attackers to stretch the opposition. Maxambomba leads the line as a lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and making runs into the channels. Lela stays wide on the right to deliver crosses, while Aladim operates on the left. These wingers often cut inside to create space for the overlapping runs of Tonico and Nilo. The front three work together to press the opposition defenders high up the pitch when the ball is lost.

One major strength of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. When Tonico and Nilo push forward, they join Lela and Aladim to overwhelm the opponent's full backs. Another advantage is the compactness when defending, as the five defenders and two midfielders create a very hard block to penetrate. This makes it difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines.
