Starting Lineup

Fillizola · Mémoli · Benegas · Bolognesi · Vergara · Cortez · J. Portillo · Villa · López · Arce · González

A heavy focus on direct attacking play and high energy defines this 4-2-4 formation. The lineup is built to stretch the defence and exploit space quickly once the ball is won. By playing with four dedicated attackers, the team aims to overwhelm the opposition with verticality and constant pressure on the back line.

Fillizola plays between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back four functions as a flat back four, with Vergara and Mémoli operating as full backs to provide width. Bolognesi and Benegas act as the central defensive pair, where Bolognesi looks to cover space while Benegas focuses on winning the headers and tackling. This unit must remain disciplined to prevent being caught out when the team pushes forward.

In the middle of the pitch, the team operates with a double pivot. J. Portillo and Cortez occupy the central roles to protect the defence and connect the lines. J. Portillo acts as a carrier to drive the ball forward, while Cortez works to intercept passes and recycle possession. This pairing is tasked with winning the second ball and immediately looking to find the front four during transitions.

The attacking unit uses two strikers in a partnership alongside wide wingers. López and Arce work as a central duo, where one can hold up the ball to allow the others to move into space. González and Villa operate as wide wingers, often looking to cut inside or provide width to stretch the opposition. The front four are expected to press from the front to force a long ball and win it back high up the pitch.

One major advantage of this 4-2-4 is the ability to create wide overloads and isolations. With González and Villa spreading the play, the team can quickly switch play to exploit gaps. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the direct nature of the formation allows the team to hit in behind on the transition before the opposition can settle.

This formation relies on high intensity and rapid movement to bypass the midfield of the opponent. It is best suited for matches where the team needs to score goals quickly or face a side that struggles with deep defending.
