Starting Lineup

Bas · Gio · Tigo · Maarten · Quim · Willem · Dali · Mer · Evert · Sjors · Maxie

Focusing on high intensity pressing and quick transitions, FC Utrecht utilizes a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to push the opposition back and win the ball high up the pitch to catch them out of position. The tactical goal is to control the width of the pitch while remaining compact in the central zones to force turnovers.

Gio operates between the posts as the last line of defense. In front of him, the back three consists of Bas, Willem, and Maarten. Bas acts as the central anchor to mark the striker, while Willem and Maarten occupy the right and left channels of the defense to cover the space behind the midfielders. This trio tends to sit in a medium block to prevent long balls from breaking the line. They must step up together to maintain the defensive line when the ball moves forward.

The midfield unit functions with two central players, Mer and Dali, who act as a double pivot to protect the back three. Mer and Dali must work to intercept passes and shield the defense during sustained pressure. On the flanks, Quim and Tigo play as wide midfielders to provide the necessary width. Quim and Tigo are tasked to overlap or underlap to support the attack, while also tracking back to help the defenders when the team loses possession.

Up front, the attacking trio of Sjors, Evert, and Maxie stays high to stretch the opponent. Sjors plays as the lone striker to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Evert and Maxie operate as wide attackers, looking to cut inside or deliver crosses into the box. This front three must press in coordination to stop the opposition from building from the back.

One major advantage for FC Utrecht is the ability to create wide overloads when Quim and Tigo push forward to join Evert and Maxie. This forces the opposing full backs to make difficult decisions about whether to stay central or track the runners. Another strength is the compactness of the central block, where Mer, Dali, and the three defenders can shift together to close down passing lanes and force the play wide.

This formation relies on the physical capacity of the wide midfielders to cover the entire flank. It is a lineup best suited for facing teams that play with a high line and can be exploited through quick vertical passing.
