In front of the goal, BALLESTRERO acts as the last line of defense. The back five consists of a central trio where FERNÁNDEZ sits in the middle of the defense. MASCHERONI and NASAZZI play as the left and right central defenders, providing cover and strength in the air. On the flanks, GESTIDO and ANDRADE operate as wing backs who provide width and are expected to push high up the pitch. This defensive unit can drop into a deep block to protect the area or step up to squeeze the space between the lines.

The midfield operates with a central pair of players. CEA and SCARONE occupy the two central roles to control the tempo and break the lines with vertical passes. These two must work hard to cover the space left by the advancing wing backs while shielding the back five. They link the defense to the attack by recycling possession or playing long balls to the front three.

Uruguay uses a front three to pressure the opposition. CASTRO leads the line as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and fight against central defenders. On either side, IRIARTE and DORADO act as wide attackers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. They press the opposing full backs to prevent them from building play from the back.
