Klinsmann guards the goal as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, the back four maintains a disciplined line to prevent through balls. Vroussai and Frabotta hold their positions to keep the defense narrow, while Saatci and Ciofi act as the central pillars. Saatci and Ciofi must communicate well to cover space when a teammate pushes up, and they use their strength to win aerial duels.

The midfield unit operates as a central block with a double pivot. Calo and Bisoli sit in front of the defense to shield the back four and intercept passes. Bastoni works in the central area to connect the defense to the rest of the team by passing into the channels. Another strength is the ability to use the wide players to transition quickly from a low block to a counter attack. This allows the team to switch play rapidly to catch defenders off guard.
