River Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Andino · Carrizo · Medina · Lencina · Meza · Bustos · Marcich · Gondou · Canale · Rivero · LedesmaFocusing on quick transitions and a compact defensive block, River plays a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup seeks to sit deep when without the ball before launching rapid attacks through the wide areas. The team relies on this setup to absorb pressure and then strike quickly once they regain possession in the middle third.
Ledesma guards the goal while a back five holds the defensive line. Medina sits in the center of the defense to command the area, flanked by Canale and Rivero who provide cover and ability to step up into passing lanes. The wing backs, Bustos and Marcich, provide the necessary width, with Bustos expected to push high to support the attack while Marcich tracks back to ensure the side remains secure. This defensive unit works to stay compact and prevent space between the lines.
The midfield functions with a double pivot consisting of Meza and Lencina. These two players act as the engine room, with Meza and Lencina tasked to shield the back five and intercept passes before they reach the central defenders. They must connect the defense to the front three by playing vertical passes or switching play to the flanks. Their main job is to hold their positions and prevent the opposition from playing through the middle.
In the attacking phase, River uses three players across the front line. Gondou acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and battle with central defenders, while Carrizo and Andino operate as wide attackers. Carrizo and Andino look to cut inside or provide crosses from the wings to find Gondou in the box. The front three are also the first line of defense, pressing the opposition back line to force mistakes and win the ball high up the pitch.
This formation offers several tactical advantages, such as the ability to create wide overloads when Bustos and Marcich push forward to join the wingers. The heavy presence in the defensive line allows River to remain very hard to break down in a low block. Additionally, the team can exploit the space behind the opponent's defense through the speed of transitions when the midfield wins the ball.
River relies on this 5-2-3 to frustrate dominant teams by remaining defensively solid. This lineup is best suited for matches where the opponent controls possession and the team needs to rely on counter attacking opportunities.
