Ajax Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Dolberg · Godts/Glouck · Moro/Bounida · Glouck/Bounida · Taylor · Mokio/Itakura · Jaros · Sutalo · Itakura/Baas · Baas/Alders · RosaAjax focuses on high pressing and quick transitions when playing in a 4-5-1. This formation allows the team to control the center of the pitch while remaining ready to spring forward during counter attacks. The lineup aims to suffocate opponents in their own half before breaking lines with rapid vertical movements.
Dolberg guards the goal as the last line of defense. A back four provides the base, with Taylor acting as a central defender to cover space and intercept passes. The side positions of Moro/Bounida and Godts/Glouck allow for width, with the ability to push up and overlap to support the attack. Glouck/Bounida works alongside Taylor to maintain a solid block and win aerial duels. The unit must shift together to close gaps and deny space between the lines.
The midfield functions with a single pivot and four supporting players. Mokio/Itakura sits in front of the defense to shield the back line and break up play. Baas/Alders and Rosa occupy the central spaces to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. The wide attacking midfielders, Itakura/Baas and Sutalo, provide additional passing lanes and help press the opposition wide players. This central density makes it hard for opponents to pass through the middle.
Ajax uses a lone striker, Jaros, to lead the line. He must hold up the ball to bring the midfielders into the play. The wide players, Sutalo and Itakura/Baas, cut inside to create central threats, which forces the opposition defenders to pull out of position. The attack is built through quick combinations in the final third, with the midfielders making runs to support Jaros as he fights for position against the center backs.
One major advantage of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having five players in the midfield, Ajax can quickly recover the ball and transition into attack. The team also benefits from numerical superiority in the central zones, allowing them to dominate possession. When defending, the players can drop deep to create a compact block that is very difficult to break down.
This 4-5-1 formation provides a balanced way to control games through pressing and central control. It is best suited for matches against teams that like to play with wide wingers and need to be squeezed in the middle.
