River focuses on defensive stability and rapid transitions through a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting opponents with speed on the break. The team looks to control the middle of the pitch while keeping a compact block to prevent passing through the center.

A. Rossi stays between the posts to organize the defense from the back. The back line consists of a back three with A. Moreno in the middle, flanked by V. Gomez and M. Quarta. M. Quarta provides aerial strength and good passing range from the right side of the central trio. The wing backs, G. Montiel on the right and Acuña on the left, are tasked with providing width. They must track back to form a flat five when defending, but they also push up high to overlap and send crosses into the box.

The midfield works as a three man unit to control the central zone. Castaño and N. Dominguez occupy the central roles, where they work to intercept passes and shield the back three. N. Dominguez drives forward to link the play, while Echeverri operates as the attacking ten behind the two strikers. Echeverri moves between the lines to find pockets of space and create chances. This trio connects the defensive unit to the forward line, ensuring the team can move from a low block to an attacking position quickly.

In the final third, River employs two forwards to stretch the opposition. Gondou leads the line as the lone striker, tasked with holding up the ball and wrestling with defenders. Driussi plays as a second striker, often cutting inside to find goal scoring opportunities or dropping deeper to support the midfield. The presence of these two forwards forces the opposing central defenders to stay deep, which creates room for Echeverri to run into the box.

A major strength of this River lineup is the ability to create wide overloads when G. Montiel and Acuña push forward simultaneously. The team also benefits from being very compact when defending, making it hard for opponents to break the lines. The speed of transition from a defensive block to a vertical attack allows the two forwards to isolate defenders in one on one situations.

This 5-3-2 formation is a solid way to defend against teams that dominate possession. It is best suited for matches where River needs to absorb pressure and strike effectively on the counter attack.
