Prioritizing defensive solidity and rapid transitions, Atlético plays a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep, absorb pressure, and strike quickly once the ball is won. The team relies on compactness to deny space between the lines, making them very hard to break down in central areas.

Jan Oblak acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back four features Ruggeri at left back and Nahuel Molina at right back, both expected to track back and cover wide areas. In the center, J. M. Giménez and Lenglet form the defensive block. Giménez provides aerial strength and physical presence, while Lenglet helps to cover space when the line steps up. The defensive unit works as a cohesive block to force opponents out wide.

The midfield functions as a five man unit to control the center of the pitch. Koke, the captain, sits in the middle to direct play and connect the defense to the attack with his passing range. Pablo Barrios and Giuliano Simeone occupy the holding roles to shield the back four and intercept passes. Alex Baena and Nico González operate in the central spaces to drive forward and link the midfield to the lone striker.

A single striker, Julián Álvarez, leads the front line. He is tasked to press high and disrupt the opposition buildup while holding up the ball to allow the midfield to move up the pitch. Because the team uses five midfielders, the wide players must tuck in to maintain compactness, which means the attack relies on the midfielders making late runs into the box. Julián Álvarez often makes runs to break the line and create chaos in the box.

This formation offers the advantage of massive numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. By crowding the midfield, Atlético can easily intercept passes and win second balls. The team also benefits from a very high level of compactness when defending in a low block. When they win the ball, the speed of transition allows them to catch opponents out of position before they can recover.

Atlético uses this 4-5-1 formation to remain defensively stable while looking for quick attacking opportunities. It is best suited for games against possession heavy opponents where sitting deep and hitting on the break is effective.
