Starting Lineup

ROMERO · BENITEZ · CHAPARRO · PEREZ · CALGARO · ALEGRE · FUCENECCO · GUERTA · OLIVIERI · SALAS · MARRACHINI

Prioritizing defensive compactness and quick transitions, Vélez utilizes a 4-4-2 formation to control the pitch. This lineup relies on a clear division of labor between the lines to remain hard to break down. The goal is to sit deep when out of possession and then strike quickly once the ball is recovered.

In the defensive third, ROMERO acts as the last line of defense. The back four remains relatively flat to maintain a cohesive block. CHAPARRO and PEREZ form the central pairing, with CHAPARRO covering wide spaces while PEREZ focuses on holding his position. BENITEZ provides stability on the right side, while CALGARO pushes up the left to offer width. This unit works to stay close together to deny space between the lines.

The midfield utilizes a hybrid setup to link the defense to the attack. GUERTA plays as a single pivot to shield the back four and break up play. Ahead of him, OLIVIERI and ALEGRE operate in the central zones to provide energy and ball retention. FUCENECCO operates in the pocket between the midfield and the strikers, looking to find pockets of space and play incisive passes. This connection allows the team to move the ball from the deep areas into the final third efficiently.

The attacking force is built around two forwards, MARRACHINI and SALAS. They operate as a strike duo, with MARRACHINI often working to hold up the ball and bring others into play. SALAS looks to make runs in behind the defense to exploit high lines. Both players press the opposition defenders to force mistakes, creating chances for the incoming midfielders. The width is provided by the lateral movements of the midfielders and the overlapping runs of the full backs.

Vélez finds tactical advantages through their defensive compactness and the ability to overload the midfield when FUCENECCO steps up. This creates numerical superiority in central areas, making it difficult for opponents to pass through the middle. The speed of transition from a low block to a vertical attack allows the team to catch opponents out of position. By isolating SALAS and MARRACHINI in one on one situations, the team can punish mistakes quickly.

This 4-4-2 formation focuses on defensive solidity and rapid verticality. It is most effective against teams that commit too many players forward and leave space behind their defense.
