Starting Lineup

Helmersen · Grundetjern · Ravn-Haren · Ambina · Bjørdal · Lange · Hedenstad · Näsberg · Kiil-Olsen · Larsson · Hedvall

Vålerenga aims to control games through a heavy defensive block and quick transitions using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup relies on staying compact to deny space between the lines and then hitting opponents on the break. The team looks to sit deep when out of possession, making it very difficult for the opposition to find openings in the final third.

Hedvall guards the goal as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, the back five includes Ambina, Näsberg, and Kiil-Olsen as the central trio. Ambina acts as the anchor while Näsberg and Kiil-Olsen cover the spaces around him. The wide defenders, Larsson and Hedenstad, provide the width. Larsson and Hedenstad push up the flanks to support the attack but must track back quickly to maintain the five man line. This defensive unit works to stay close together to prevent through balls.

The midfield works in a flat four to shield the defense. Lange sits in the pivot role to intercept passes and protect the central defenders. Bjørdal and Ravn-Haren occupy the central midfield spots to press opponents and win second balls. Grundetjern plays as the attacking midfielder to connect the midfield to the lone striker. This midfield group must shift side to side to block passing lanes and ensure the team remains compact.

Vålerenga uses a lone striker, Helmersen, to lead the line. Helmersen must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to move forward. The attack is built by utilizing the width provided by Larsson and Hedenstad when they overlap. Grundetjern looks to find pockets of space between the opposition defense and midfield to create chances. When the team wins the ball, the wingers and attacking midfielder push high to support Helmersen in the transition.

This formation offers great compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping the lines tight, Vålerenga makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. Another strength is the ability to use the wing backs for wide overloads. When Hedenstad or Larsson push up, they create extra passing options that can isolate defenders in one on one situations during a counter attack.

The 5-4-1 formation is built to be defensively solid and frustrate the opposition. It is best suited for matches against teams that dominate possession where Vålerenga can sit deep and strike on the break.
