Bologna Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Otis (Totti) · Samson · Eliah · Colin · Hannes · Ville · Toffe · Ison · Rufus · Jonas · TeddieBologna aims to be hard to break down and strike quickly on the break using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on defensive solidity and compact blocks, relying on rapid transitions to catch opponents out of position. The tactical identity centers on a low block that invites pressure before launching long balls or quick vertical passes to the front three.
Otis sits between the posts to command his area and organize the back line. A back three forms the core of the defense with Colin acting as the central anchor while Hannes and Eliah sit on either side to cover space. The wing backs, Ville and Samson, are tasked with providing width and tracking back to defend the flanks. When the team sits deep, the five defenders stay close together to prevent gaps, but Ville and Samson must step up to press the opposition wide players.
The midfield consists of a double pivot with Toffe and Ison operating in the center. These two players must work hard to cover the ground between the defense and the attack. Ison and Toffe focus on intercepting passes and breaking up play to stop the opposition from moving forward. They act as the link, winning the ball and immediately looking to find the attackers. This central duo must remain disciplined to ensure they do not leave the central defenders exposed during transitions.
In the attacking phase, Bologna uses three players to stretch the opposition. Jonas leads the line as a lone striker to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Teddie and Rufus operate as wide attackers, with Teddie playing on the left and Rufus on the right. They look to cut inside or use the width provided by the overlapping runs of Ville and Samson. The front three are expected to press high when the ball is lost to prevent the opponent from building play easily.
One major strength of this formation is the numerical superiority in the defensive zone, making it very difficult for opponents to find space in the box. The presence of Hannes, Eliah, and Colin provides massive aerial strength and stability. Another advantage is the speed of transition when Toffe or Ison win the ball, allowing Rufus and Teddie to sprint into open channels. This creates constant pressure on the opposing full backs.
This 5-2-3 lineup is built to absorb pressure and exploit spaces behind a high defensive line. It is most effective against teams that dominate possession but struggle with fast counter attacks.
