Starting Lineup

Cosenza focuses on a compact defensive block and quick transitions through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep, deny space between the lines, and strike rapidly when the opposition loses possession. By prioritizing defensive solidity, Cosenza aims to frustrate more possession based teams and use the width of the pitch to exploit gaps.

In the defensive unit, 1 AR stays between the posts to command the area. The back four consists of 4 LD and 2 DD on the right side, while 6 CI holds the left flank. To complete the line, 3 DI operates as a left sided central defender. These players must stay close together to prevent through balls, with the full backs ready to track back and cover wide areas. The central defenders need to be strong in the air to deal with crosses and must step up to catch attackers offside.

The midfield works as a dense bank of five to control the central zone. 8 MO and 5 MC form a double pivot to shield the defense, providing a layer of protection before the opposition reaches the back four. Ahead of them, 11 DS, 7 ED, and 10 MP act as the engine room. These three players must shift horizontally to cover gaps and press the ball when it enters their zone. This midfield layer connects the defense to the attack by recycling possession or playing direct vertical passes to the front.

In the attacking phase, the team relies on a lone striker, 9 DC, to lead the line. 9 DC must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to push forward. The attacking structure creates width through the movements of the wide midfielders, who can cut inside to create overloads in the half spaces. While 9 DC occupies the central defenders, the players in the middle third make late runs into the box to support the final ball.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to maintain extreme compactness when defending in a low block. By crowding the middle, Cosenza makes it very difficult for opponents to break the lines with central passes. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can quickly switch play from one side to the other to catch a retreating defense out of position.

Cosenza uses this setup to remain resilient and difficult to break down. This formation is best suited for games against technically superior opponents where sitting deep and absorbing pressure is necessary.
