Focusing on heavy central control and dominating the middle of the pitch, River employs a 2-6-2 formation. This lineup is built to play a high possession game by overwhelming the opposition in the center. By flooding the middle, the team looks to pass through blocks and control the tempo of every match.

Ledesma guards the goal while the defensive unit relies on a very compact back two. Martinez Quarta and Rivero act as the central defenders, tasked with holding the line and covering large spaces behind them. Because there are no traditional full backs, Martinez Quarta uses his ability to read the game to intercept passes, while Rivero must stay deep to prevent long balls from breaking the line. The two defenders must be careful to track back quickly whenever the opposition finds space in the wide areas.

The midfield is the engine of this River lineup, acting as a massive six man block to control the game. Acuña and Montiel sit in the deepest positions to shield the back two, acting as a double pivot to break up play. In front of them, Ascacíbar, Lencina, and Castaño operate as central midfielders to connect the defense to the attack. Quintero plays as the attacking ten, using his exceptional passing range to find openings in the opposition defense. This heavy midfield presence allows the team to keep the ball and move it quickly between players to find space.

In the final third, the team uses two forwards to pressure the opposition backline. Gondou plays as the lone striker, using his strength to hold up the ball and bring others into play. Colidio operates as the second striker, often cutting inside to find pockets of space between the lines. These two forwards are expected to press high, forcing turnovers that allow the massive midfield to push forward immediately.

The formation offers clear tactical advantages, most notably the massive numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. With six midfielders, it is very difficult for opponents to find space to pass or move forward. This setup also allows for quick transitions, as Quintero can immediately launch a ball to the two attackers once the midfield wins possession.

This formation is designed to suffocate opponents through central dominance and constant ball retention. It is best suited for matches against teams that sit deep and try to defend in a narrow block.
