The midfield operates with a four man grouping that connects the defense to the attack. E. Royal and A. Sandro form a double pivot to shield the two central defenders and intercept passes. Jorginho and Saúl play further up as wide midfielders, providing passing range and driving the ball forward into the half spaces. This midfield block works to press the opponent immediately upon losing the ball to prevent counter attacks.

Flamengo uses a heavy front line consisting of four attackers to pin the defense back. Lino and de la Cruz provide width on the wings, looking to cut inside or deliver crosses into the box. In the central areas, de Arrascaeta operates in a pocket of space to create chances, while Pedro stays high to hold up the ball and finish. These attackers press the opposition back line in coordinated waves to force mistakes.

A main strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads and numerical superiority in the attacking third. By having four players close to the opponent's goal, Flamengo can quickly switch play to find isolated players. The high press led by Pedro and de Arrascaeta makes it difficult for opponents to build play from the back. This setup creates constant pressure and forces the opposition to sit very deep.
