Starting Lineup

H-D. Höttges (Borussia M'gladbach) · Pepe (Real Madrid) · H-J. Dörner (Dynamo Dresden) · J-P. Sorin (Juventus) · J. Kimmich (FC Bayern) · D. Blanchflower (Tottenham) · Zizinho (Flamengo) · S. Matthews (Stoke) · M. Overmans (Ajax) · A. Menezes (Vasco da Gama) · V. Beara (Vasco da Gama)

A high pressing and vertical system defines this lineup with a 2-5-3 formation. The team seeks to win the ball high up the pitch and move it forward with speed to catch opponents out of position. This formation relies on extreme aggression in the middle of the park to control games through quick transitions and direct play.

A. Menezes acts as the goalkeeper for the defense. The back line consists of a two man central defensive unit with S. Matthews and M. Overmans acting as the primary defenders. S. Matthews and M. Overmans must play as ball playing defenders to help play short from the back and cover large amounts of space behind them. Because the team only uses two central defenders, they must remain compact and stay alert to any runners in behind while the rest of the team presses high.

The midfield is the engine of this formation, utilizing a five man unit that dominates the center. Zizinho and D. Blanchflower operate as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and control the tempo. J. Kimmich plays as a central midfielder to connect the defensive and attacking lines, often carrying the ball forward to break the line. J-P. Sorin and H-D. Höttges operate in the half spaces as left and right attacking midfielders. They press aggressively to win the ball high and are expected to arrive late into the box to support the attack.

The attacking front line features three players who stretch the defence. Pepe and H-J. Dörner act as wide wingers, with Pepe playing on the left and H-J. Dörner on the right. They are expected to pull wide to create space before cutting inside to threaten the goal. V. Beara operates as a lone striker and serves as the focal point to hold up the ball and find the feet of the oncoming midfielders. The forwards work in unison to press the opposition back line, forcing long balls and winning the second ball to maintain pressure.

One major advantage of this formation is the heavy numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to control possession and squeeze the space in the center. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, with the front three and the wide midfielders immediately triggering a press when the ball is lost. This high intensity can quickly force a turnover and allow the team to attack the near post or far post with numbers in the box.

This high intensity formation is built to dominate games through aggressive pressing and central control. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to play out from the back or cannot handle heavy pressure in their own half.
