Starting Lineup
CB (Man Utd) · CB (Liverpool) · RB (Liverpool) · CM (Tottenham) · LB (Man City) · CM (Man City) · CDM (Barcelona) · ST (Corinthians) · LW (Liverpool) · RW (Aston Villa) · Gk (Brighton)Seeking to control the game through deep defensive work and rapid transitions, the team operates in a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep in a mid-block and wait for the opposition to commit players forward before striking with speed. The plan relies on a compact unit that is hard to break down through the middle.
ST protects the goal as the goalkeeper. The back line functions as a flat back four with LW playing as the right back and RW acting as the left back. In the center, CM serves as a ball playing defender on the left while CM covers on the right. This unit stays narrow to deny space through the middle and relies on the defenders to clear the lines when under pressure.
A five man midfield occupies the central areas to create a wall. CDM sits in front of the defense to shield the back four and deny the pivot. To his sides, LB and RB play as central midfielders to help recycle possession. The two advanced midfielders, CB and CB, operate in the half spaces to press from the front and win the ball high up the pitch. This midfield unit works to compress the space between the lines and link the defense to the attack.
The attack relies on a lone striker, Gk, to lead the line. Since there are no wide wingers, Gk must work to hold up the ball and find the feet of the advancing midfielders. The team builds play by looking to hit in behind on the transition once the ball is won. The forwards press the opposition back line to force a long ball, creating chances for the midfielders to pick up runners or arrive late into the box.
This formation offers great compactness when defending, making it difficult for opponents to find gaps between the lines. The numerical superiority in the midfield allows the team to dominate the center of the pitch and win the second ball. By using the wide midfielders to squeeze the space, the team can effectively force the opponent onto the wings.
The 4-5-1 formation focuses on defensive solidity and quick, vertical movements. It is best suited for matches against possession based teams where the goal is to sit deep and counter at pace.
