St. Gallen Football Formation
Starting Lineup
ZIGI (73) · GALLARDO (76) · SAÏSS (79) · VALLCI (69) · STANIC (68) · VANDERMERSCH (69) · QUINTILLA (70) · WITZIG (70) · GÖRTLER (72) · VLADI (66) · EFEKELE (63)St. Gallen prefers to play with a vertical identity centered on quick transitions and defensive solidity, utilizing a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before launching rapid attacks through the wide areas and central channels. By packing the central zones, St. Gallen aims to disrupt the rhythm of the opposition and force them into wide areas where they can be contained.
Zigi protects the goal as the last line of defense. In front of him, the defensive unit operates in a back five. Saïss and Vallci form the central core, where Saïss provides aerial strength and Vallci acts to cover space behind. Stanic sits as the right central defender to complete this block. On the flanks, Gallardo and Vandermersch act as wing backs. They are expected to push high to provide width during attacks but must track back quickly to form a flat five when the team loses the ball.
The midfield functions as a single line of three. Quintilla sits in the holding role as the single pivot, acting to shield the defenders and intercept passes. Witzig and Görtler operate as the two central midfielders, tasked with driving the ball forward and connecting the defense to the front line. This midfield trio works to maintain compactness, ensuring there is little space between the lines for the opposition to exploit.
St. Gallen employs two forwards to lead the line. Efekele and Vladi work as a strike partnership, often looking to run in behind the opposition defense. Vladi often works to hold up the ball, allowing the midfielders to push up the pitch. The wing backs, Gallardo and Vandermersch, provide the primary width, allowing the two strikers to stay central and occupy the two opposition center backs. This movement creates space in the half spaces for Witzig and Görtler to make late runs into the box.
A major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads through the overlapping runs of Gallardo and Vandermersch. The team also benefits from extreme compactness when defending in a low block, making it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The speed of transition from a defensive stance to an attacking one allows Vladi and Efekele to exploit disorganized defenses immediately after a turnover.
This 5-3-2 formation provides a reliable way for St. Gallen to remain defensively solid while threatening on the counter. It is a lineup best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and push many players forward.
