Starting Lineup
NAKSHATRA (GK) · IMRAN (C) (CB) · SAKET (RB) · ANAS (CB) · ANISH (LB) · SANJIV (CDM) · ADHAVAN (CM) · RUDRA (CM) · HEMANTH (ST) · AKSHAT (LW) · MANMOHAN (RW)A heavy focus on defensive stability and quick transitions defines this lineup, which operates in a 5-2-3 formation. The team looks to sit deep and squeeze the space when opponents have the ball, before looking to hit in behind on the transition. This formation is built to absorb pressure and then use the width of the pitch to exploit gaps in a retreating defensive line.
NAKSHATRA stays between the posts to command the area and organize the back five. The defensive unit employs a narrow defensive block with SANJIV acting as the central anchor. To his right, the captain IMRAN (C) provides leadership and covers the space behind the wing backs, while ANAS plays as the left center back to maintain a compact line. The wide roles are filled by SAKET as the right wing back and ANISH as the left wing back, both of whom are tasked to push high to provide width during attacks. This system allows the back three to hold the line and stay close together to deny the turn to opposition strikers.
The midfield operates as a double pivot to provide a screen in front of the back five. ADHAVAN and RUDRA work together to protect the center of the pitch, often dropping deep to help the defenders play out from the back. ADHAVAN works to intercept passes and recycle possession, while RUDRA aims to carry the ball forward to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Their main job is to win the second ball and ensure the opposition cannot play through the center.
In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the defence. HEMANTH acts as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. On the flanks, AKSHAT plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside, while MANMOHAN operates as a wide winger on the right to stay high and wide. This setup creates constant threat through runs in behind and allows the wing backs to overlap the winger to deliver crosses. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball and disrupt the build up of the opposition.
This formation offers significant tactical advantages through its compactness when defending and the ability to create wide overloads. When SAKET and ANISH push forward, they create numerical superiority on the flanks, forcing the opposition to defend deep. The team can also shift quickly from a low block to a vertical attack, using the speed of the front three to punish teams that lose possession.
This 5-2-3 formation relies on a solid defensive foundation and rapid movement in the attacking transitions. It is best suited for facing teams that dominate possession and allows the side to counter at pace.
