Man City wants to dominate the ball and keep the opponent pinned in their own half. To achieve this level of control, the team employs a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to play a high pressing game where the goal is to squeeze the pitch and maintain constant possession.

Donnarumma acts as the last line of defense behind a two man back line. Gvardiol and R. Dias sit deep as the central defenders. R. Dias is known for his aerial strength and ability to read the game to intercept passes. Because there are only two defenders, they must step up to press and quickly drop back to cover the space if the high line is broken.

The midfield uses a double pivot to anchor the center of the pitch. M. Nunes and Aït-Nouri sit deep to provide cover, while Rodri, Reijnders, and B. Silva push higher to connect the defense to the attack. Rodri uses his elite passing range to switch play and control the tempo. This dense midfield block makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle.

Up front, the team uses three attackers to stretch the opposition. Haaland operates as the main striker, using his physical presence to hold up the ball and break the line. Marmoush and Foden play as wide attackers. Foden often looks to cut inside to create more central presence, while Marmoush provides width on the opposite flank. The forwards press intensely to force mistakes high up the pitch.

A major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. With five midfielders, Manchester City can easily overload the middle and dominate the ball. The team also creates heavy pressure through coordinated waves of pressing. By having so many players close together, they can quickly shift and block passing lanes to win the ball back immediately after losing it.

This formation is designed for total dominance through high possession and aggressive pressing. It is most effective against teams that defend in a low block and cannot bypass the heavy midfield numbers.
