Starting Lineup

Seeking to dominate the center of the pitch through high volume passing and intense pressure, SK Rapid utilizes a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the ball and pin opponents back in their own half. By sacrificing traditional wide defensive depth, the team pushes bodies forward to overwhelm the middle third of the field.

Hedl sits between the posts to organize the defensive line as the unit steps up to squeeze the space. Grgic and Cvetkovic act as a central pair of defenders, tasked with holding a high line and intercepting long balls. Because there are only two central defenders, they must communicate constantly to cover gaps left by the midfield. The back line relies on quick recovery runs to manage any direct balls played behind them.

The midfield functions as a massive block designed to suffocate the opposition. Schöller and Bolla operate as a double pivot to shield the two central defenders and break up play. Seidl and Amane provide the engine in the middle, driving forward to support the attack while staying close enough to track back. Gulliksen plays as the attacking midfielder, operating in the pockets of space between the opposition midfield and defense to create chances.

Up front, the attack focuses on width and central movement. Wurmbrand stays wide on the left to stretch the defense, while Tilio pushes from the right to cut inside. Antiste leads the line as the lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and bring others into play. This front three works together to press the opponent back, forcing errors through constant movement and high intensity.

One major advantage for SK Rapid is the ability to create massive numerical superiority in the central areas. The combination of a five man midfield and a three man attack makes it very difficult for opponents to keep possession. This formation also allows for quick transitions, as the proximity of the midfielders to the attackers means they can switch play or break the line with single passes immediately after winning the ball.
