Starting Lineup

Gk · Lb · Cb · Cb · Rb · Cm · Cm · Rm · Lm · St · St

Prioritizing heavy verticality and aggressive pressing, Atlético operates with a 2-4-4 formation. This lineup aims to pin the opposition deep in their own half by flooding the final third with numbers. It is a high risk system designed to win the ball back immediately after a loss to launch quick attacks.

The defensive duties start with Gk, who must stay alert to long balls played over the back. Behind the midfield, the two central defenders, Cb and Cb, sit in a narrow pair to guard the central corridor. They must track runners and stay compact to prevent through balls. Because there are no traditional full backs, these two must be strong in the air and quick to cover the wide spaces when the team loses possession.

In the middle of the pitch, a quartet connects the defense to the attack. St acts as the central anchor in the midfield, holding the position to provide a platform for others. To the left and right, Cm and Cm provide the engine, helping to break the lines with passes and pressing opponents in the middle zone. Rb operates in an advanced role, moving into the attacking midfield area to create central overloads and support the forward line.

The attacking unit is massive, utilizing four dedicated players to overwhelm the opponent. Lb occupies the left wing to stretch the defense, while Rm stays wide on the right flank. In the central areas, the two strikers, St and Lm, occupy the channels and the box. They are tasked to press the opposing defenders constantly and make runs behind the back line to receive direct passes.

Atlético gains a significant advantage through numerical superiority in the attacking zone, often forcing defenders into mistakes through sheer pressure. The presence of Rb in the advanced midfield area allows the team to create overloads that pull opposition midfielders out of position. This setup also provides great speed of transition, as the four forwards can immediately punish a disorganized defense.

This 2-4-4 formation is built for a high press that aims to dominate the game in the opponent's half. It is best suited for games where the team needs to break down a low block or face an opponent that struggles with intense physical pressure.
