The goalkeeper operates as a defensive goalkeeper to provide security behind the back line. A flat back four forms the base of the defense. The left central defender and right central defender act as build up players who look to pass out from the back. On the left, the attacking full-back pushes high to provide width. On the right, the defensive full-back stays deeper to guard against wide runners. The defensive unit must shift together to maintain compactness.

In the middle of the pitch, Roma uses a double pivot to control the tempo. The orchestrator sits in the left central midfield role to dictate play and break lines with passing. Beside them, the anchor man provides a shield for the defense by sitting deep and intercepting passes. Moving higher up, the creative playmaker operates on the right side of the midfield to find pockets of space. The dummy runner on the left side moves into channels to pull defenders out of position and connect the midfield to the attack.

The attack is built around two forwards working in close proximity. Both the left striker and the right striker act as goal poachers who look to stay on the shoulder of the last defender. They do not drop deep to build play but instead focus on making runs into the box to finish chances. The front line presses the opposition defenders to force errors. This setup creates constant vertical movement that tests the ability of the opposing center backs to track runners.
