Coritiba favors a direct and defensive identity using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and defend compact spaces while looking to strike quickly on the break. The team relies on a high level of work rate to close down passing lanes and force mistakes from the opposition.

P. Morisco acts as the last line of defense behind a back four. Maicon and W. Machado. the captain, form the central defensive pairing. Maicon provides strength in the air while W. Machado covers ground to sweep behind the line. Tinga plays as the right back and can push forward to support the wing, whereas Á. Angulo operates on the left. This defensive unit functions as a cohesive block that can shift laterally to deny space in the channels.

The midfield functions as a dense bank of five to control the center of the pitch. S. Gómez and Jacy act as a double pivot to shield the back line and intercept play. In front of them, Pedro Rocha, Josué, and L. Ronier occupy the central and half spaces. Pedro Rocha connects the defensive unit to the attack, while Josué and L. Ronier help to press the opposition in the middle third. This midfield block makes it difficult for opponents to play through the center.

Up front, J. Kennedy acts as a lone striker to lead the press. He is tasked with holding up the ball and bringing the midfielders into play. The attacking unit relies on the midfielders to push up and support him, creating a sense of width through late runs. Kennedy must work to harass defenders to prevent them from building play from the back. This movement creates space for the midfielders to break the line with vertical passes.

Coritiba gains a tactical advantage by creating massive compactness when defending in a mid block. The five midfielders and four defenders leave very little room for opponents to operate between the lines. Another strength is the ability to use the speed of transition once the ball is recovered in the middle. The team can quickly switch play to the wide areas or launch direct balls toward J. Kennedy to exploit gaps in a retreating defense.

This 4-5-1 formation is designed to be defensively solid and difficult to break down. It is best suited for games against superior possession sides where Coritiba can absorb pressure and strike on the counter.
