Starting Lineup

Penev · Pacia (Kozarac) · Scott · Pehlivanov · Lærke · Gorter (Kovač) · Di Pasquale · Calame · Dalla Costa · Esteban · Onyemachi

Lecce aims to play a vertical brand of football centered on quick transitions and direct play through a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup relies on heavy work rates to cover the pitch and create numbers in both boxes. By using a central core to control the tempo, the team looks to win the ball and immediately push forward to catch opponents out of position.

Penev stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three featuring Scott, Pacia, and Pehlivanov. Scott acts as the central anchor, while Pacia and Pehlivanov provide cover on either side to track runners. This trio can step up to squeeze the space or drop into a low block when the team sits deep. The defensive unit functions by maintaining compactness to prevent central penetration.

The midfield utilizes a central trio consisting of Di Pasquale, Gorter, and Calame to control the middle of the park. Di Pasquale operates to shield the defense, while Gorter and Calame work to connect the defense to the attack. To provide width, Lærke and Dalla Costa occupy the wide areas as wingbacks. They must track back to help the defenders and push up to provide crosses when Lecce has the ball. This group allows the team to transition from a compact defensive block into an attacking force.

In the final third, the team employs two forwards to stretch the opposition. Onyemachi operates as the left striker, playing alongside Esteban in the right striker role. These two forwards press the opposition backline to force mistakes and direct the play. The attack is built through quick passes from the midfield to the wide players or directly to the strikers. The movement of the two attackers is designed to create space for the late runs of Gorter and Calame.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Lærke and Dalla Costa push forward to join the attack. The team also benefits from numerical superiority in the central midfield when Di Pasquale, Gorter, and Calame hold their positions against a two man midfield. This setup allows Lecce to dominate the central zone and quickly switch play to the wings to isolate opponents.

The 3-5-2 formation provides a balanced way to control the center while maintaining width through the wingbacks. It is a lineup best suited for matches against teams that play a wide attacking game where the three central defenders can cover the space.
