Austria National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
Arnautovic · Wurmbrand · Sabitzer · R. Schmid · Grillitsch · Seiwald · Prass · Laimer · Alaba · Lienhart · SchlagerFocusing on verticality and high intensity, Austria operates with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup seeks to control the middle of the pitch and overwhelm the opponent through central congestion and quick transitions. The goal is to use a heavy press to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately drive toward the goal.
Schlager stands between the posts to command his area. Ahead of him, a back two of Alaba and Lienhart must cover massive amounts of ground. Alaba provides ball playing qualities and aerial strength while Lienhart acts as a covering defender to mop up long balls. Because there are only two central defenders, they often step up to intercept passes, requiring them to be extremely fast and careful about the space left behind.
The midfield is the heart of this Austria system, utilizing a crowded central block. Prass and Laimer act as a double pivot to shield the two defenders and break up play. Grillitsch and Seiwald operate in the half spaces to connect the play, with Grillitsch using his passing range to move the ball forward. Sabitzer plays as an attacking ten, pushing into the final third to find gaps between the lines. This five man midfield allows the team to dominate possession and control the tempo of the game.
In the attacking third, the team uses three forwards to stretch the opposition. Wurmbrand plays on the left wing to provide width, while R. Schmid works on the right to cut inside or cross. Arnautovic leads the line as a lone striker, using his strength to hold up the ball and bring the midfielders into the attack. The wingers are expected to press high and track back to help the midfield when the team loses possession.
This formation offers significant numerical superiority in the center of the park, making it hard for opponents to pass through. By packing the midfield, Austria can quickly transition from a defensive block to an attacking wave. The ability to isolate Arnautovic against single defenders also creates many chances when the wide players drive forward to support him.
This 2-5-3 formation relies on extreme physical output and central dominance to dictate play. It is best suited for games where the team wants to suffocate an opponent in their own half and exploit quick transitions.
