Starting Lineup

Flamengo looks to play with a high press and quick transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball back high up the pitch and using the width of the field to stretch opponents. By utilizing three central defenders and two wide players, the team seeks to control the pitch through verticality and rapid ball movement.

Rossi stays between the posts to act as the last line of defense. The back line consists of a trio of central defenders including Jorginho, Ortíz, and Pereira. Jorginho provides presence in the air and ability to hold the line, while Ortíz and Pereira cover the spaces to the left and right. A. Lucas and E. Royal operate as wing backs, pushing high to provide width and overlapping runs while tracking back to defend the flanks. This group works to stay compact and shift as a unit to block passing lanes.

The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Saúl and de la Cruz operate in the middle to link the defense to the attack. Saúl helps shield the back three and intercepts passes, while de la Cruz uses his ball carrying ability to drive forward and break the line. These two must work hard to cover the ground between the defensive block and the front three to ensure the team does not get caught on the break.

Up front, the attack is built around three players to pressure the opposition. Pedro operates as a lone striker who can hold up the ball and play with his back to goal. Lino and de Arrascaeta play on the wings, with Lino looking to cut inside and de Arrascaeta using his passing range to create chances from wide areas. This front line is designed to press the opposing defenders constantly, forcing mistakes that allow the team to transition into attack immediately.

This formation offers specific tactical advantages through its ability to create wide overloads when E. Royal and A. Lucas push forward. By having three central defenders, Flamengo can maintain a solid block when they sit deep. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when Saúl or de la Cruz win the ball and immediately find the front three.
