Focusing on defensive stability and quick transitions, Rubin uses a 4-5-1 formation to control space. This lineup aims to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting teams on the break. The goal is to maintain a compact block that forces opponents wide and prevents passes through the middle.

Ryzhikov stays between the posts to command the penalty area. A flat back four provides the foundation, with César Navas and Sharonov working as central defenders to block crosses and win aerial duels. Kuzmin and Ansaldi act as full backs who must track back to cover wide areas while being ready to push up and provide width during transitions. This defensive unit works to stay close together to deny gaps between the lines.

The midfield is built around a single pivot, where Semak sits in front of the defense to intercept passes and shield the back four. Natcho and Noboa occupy the central roles, with Natcho using his passing range to connect the play and Noboa driving the team forward. Gökdeniz and Domínguez operate in the half spaces as attacking midfielders, tasked with pressing high and finding pockets of space between the opposition midfield and defense.

Rubin relies on a lone striker, Bukharov, to lead the line. He is expected to hold up the ball and bring the attacking midfielders into the game. The wide players, Gökdeniz and Domínguez, tuck inside to create central overloads or drift wide to provide crosses. This attacking structure relies on rapid movement to exploit the space left behind a high defensive line when the team wins the ball back.

This formation offers several tactical advantages, such as a very compact middle section that makes it hard for opponents to play through. The presence of Natcho allows for quick switches of play to catch the opposition out of position. Rubin can also use the speed of transition to isolate Bukharov against a single defender, creating one on one opportunities.
