This lineup is built to absorb pressure and strike rapidly when the opposition leaves gaps behind their midfield. The goal for St. Gallen is to remain compact and hard to break down, using the width of the pitch only when the ball is won back in deep areas.

ZIGI sits between the posts to command the defensive area. In front of him, the back line works as a unit of three central defenders with AMBROSIUS, VALLCI, and STANIC. AMBROSIUS plays as the left center back, while STANIC covers the right side, leaving VALLCI to hold the central space. The wing backs, GARCIA and SIDLER, provide the necessary width. GARCIA pushes up on the left to offer crossing options, and SIDLER carries the ball forward on the right. This group must step up together to catch attackers offside or drop deep to sit in a low block.

The midfield uses a single pivot system to control the central zone. KONIETZKE acts as the defensive shield, sitting in front of the back three to intercept passes and break up play. To his sides, WITZIG and MEIJER operate as the two central midfielders. WITZIG works to link the defense to the attack, while MEIJER drives forward to support the pressing. This trio works to stay close together, ensuring they do not leave large gaps for opponents to exploit between the lines.

The attacking unit consists of two forwards who focus on movement and hold up the ball. FREY operates as the left striker, looking to run into channels and press the opposition defenders. EFEKELE plays as the right striker, using his positioning to find space in the box. These two must work in tandem to stretch the opposing center backs. When the team wins possession, the aim is to play direct passes that bypass the opponent's midfield to find the forwards early.

This formation offers great compactness when defending in a low block. By keeping the lines close, St. Gallen can make it very difficult for opponents to play through the middle. The wing backs, GARCIA and SIDLER, create wide overloads during transitions, forcing the opposition to shift across the pitch.
