Starting Lineup

Lyon focuses on a high press and quick transitions using a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup works to squeeze the pitch and win the ball back early in the opposition half to launch direct attacks. By using five players in the middle of the park, the team aims to control the tempo and deny space to the opponent.

Greif stands between the posts to organize the back line. A flat back four consists of Mata at right back and Abner at left back. The center backs, Niakhaté and Merah, sit in a line to cover the central zone and block through balls. Mata and Abner are expected to push up to provide width, while Niakhaté and Merah stay deep to protect the area around Greif and ensure the team stays compact.

The midfield relies on a central core to dominate the center of the pitch. Morton acts as the single pivot to shield the defense and break up play. Tolisso works alongside him to help protect the back four and start the build up. Satriano, Moreira, and Šulc occupy the remaining spaces to connect the defense to the attack. Tolisso uses his passing range to find teammates, while the other three midfielders push up to press the ball and hunt for interceptions in the middle third.

In the attacking phase, the team relies on a lone striker, Endrick, to lead the line. Endrick must hold up the ball and use his physical presence to bring the five midfielders into the game. The attack is built through quick passes from the midfield to Endrick or through the wide runs of the midfielders who move into the final third. The forwards and midfielders press in waves to force mistakes high up the field.

One major advantage for Lyon is the ability to create numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. With five players occupying the midfield, they can easily overwhelm a three man unit. The team also uses the width of the pitch well when Abner and Mata overlap to create two on one situations on the flanks. This allows the team to switch play quickly and isolate opponents in wide areas.
