Starting Lineup

Seeking to control the center of the pitch through intense pressing and high numbers in the middle, SK Rapid utilizes a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup aims to dominate games by crowding the central zones and forcing opponents into mistakes. The team plays a very vertical style of football that looks to break lines quickly once the ball is recovered.

Hedl stands between the posts to anchor the defense. In front of him, the back line consists of only two central defenders, Grgic and Raux Yao, who must stay alert to cover large amounts of space. Because there are no traditional full backs, Grgic and Raux Yao often have to step up to intercept passes or drop back to deal with runners. This formation requires the defenders to be dominant in the air and very quick to shift across the pitch to protect the wide areas.

The midfield is the engine room for SK Rapid, consisting of a five man unit. J. Auer and Bolla act as a double pivot to shield the defense and sit deep to protect the two central defenders. Ahead of them, Ndzie and Amane work to drive forward and connect the defense to the attack. Gulliksen plays as the attacking ten, looking to find pockets of space between the lines and provide key passes. This heavy midfield presence allows the team to win second balls and keep possession in the middle third.

Up front, the attack is built around a three man front line. Antiste acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. On the flanks, Wurmbrand and Radulovic operate as wide attackers to provide width and stretch the opposition. Wurmbrand and Radulovic often cut inside to create numerical superiority in the middle or look to cross the ball into the box. This setup creates a lot of movement that forces the opposing back line to stay compact.

One major advantage for SK Rapid is the massive numerical superiority they enjoy in the midfield. By having five players in that zone, they can easily overwhelm opponents who use a standard three man midfield. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, with Gulliksen, Antiste, and the wingers all hunting the ball at once. This high pressure can force turnovers deep in the opponent half, leading to immediate scoring chances.
