Starting Lineup

United States seeks to control the tempo through a compact middle block and quick transitions using a 4-5-1. The midfield consists of a double pivot to shield the defense. Cardoso and McClain sit in front of the back four to intercept passes and tackle opponents. Ahead of them, Tillman, Guillén, and Pulisic operate in a crowded central area to connect the lines. Pulisic uses his dribbling style to carry the ball forward, while Tillman looks to create chances with his passing range. This group works to block passing lanes and move as a single unit to squeeze the space between the lines.

The attacking unit relies on Murrell to lead the line as a lone striker. Because there are no natural wingers in this lineup, the burden falls on the wide midfielders to support the attack. Murrell must hold up the ball to allow the midfielders to push forward. The team builds the attack by using the central players to switch play rapidly, forcing the opposition to shift and creating gaps for Pulisic or Tillman to exploit.

One major strength of this United States lineup is the ability to create numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. With five players in the middle, it is very hard for opponents to play through the center. Another advantage is the speed of transition, as the players are positioned to press high and immediately move the ball to Murrell. The team can also shift quickly from a defensive block to an attacking wave.
