Starting Lineup
Malenica (Osijek) · Valinčić (Dinamo) · McKenna (Dinamo) · Mlačić (Hajduk) · Hrgović (Hajduk) · Zajc (Dinamo) · Pukštas (Hajduk) · Fruk (Rijeka) · Hoxha (Dinamo) · Jagušić (Slaven Belupo) · Šego (Hajduk)A high press and heavy verticality define this lineup, which operates in a 4-3-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and quickly transition to the final third. The goal is to suffocate the opposition in their own half and create constant pressure through quick movements.
Malenica guards the goal as the last line of defense. The back four stays relatively high to keep the distance between the lines small. McKenna and Mlačić act as central defenders, with McKenna looking to win the header and Mlačić covering the space behind when the team pushes forward. The full backs, Hrgović and Valinčić, provide width by pushing up to overlap the wingers, while still dropping back to defend against long balls. This defensive unit works to squeeze the space and force the opposition into mistakes.
The midfield consists of a three-man midfield with a carrier in the center. Zajc sits in front of the defense as a single pivot to shield the back line and recycle possession. On either side, Fruk and Pukštas act as the engines, with Pukštas looking to drive forward with the ball and Fruk finding ways to play through the lines. This trio connects the defense to the attack, ensuring that the transition from winning the ball to moving forward is rapid and controlled.
In the attacking third, the team utilizes three attackers across the front. Šego operates as a pressing centre-forward, looking to pin the last defender and find space between the lines. Hoxha and Jagušić act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create central overloads, often leaving space for the full backs to exploit. The forwards press from the front in a coordinated way to force a long ball from the opposition, allowing the team to win the second ball and restart the attack.
One major strength of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The team also creates wide overloads when Hrgović and Valinčić push up to support the wingers, often catching the opposition defense out of position. This ability to quickly switch play and exploit wide areas makes them a threat in both sustained possession and quick transitions.
This 4-3-3 formation relies on intense pressure and rapid verticality to break down opponents. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to play out from the back under heavy pressure.
