Nunes (Man City) (Man City) · Hume (Sunderland) (Sunderland) · Ampadu (Leeds) (Leeds) · Rogers (Aston Villa) (Aston Villa) · Calvert-Lewin (Leeds) (Leeds) · Haaland ((Man City) (Man City) · Woltemade (Newcastle) (Newcastle) · Lewis-Potter (Brentford) (Brentford) · Andersen (Fulham) (Fulham)The team relies on a direct and vertical style of play, operating within a 4-4-2 formation. This lineup focuses on winning second balls and using long passing to find the forwards quickly. The goal is to strike fast when the ball is recovered, making the team very dangerous in transition.
Verbruggen plays between the posts to manage the defensive line. A flat back four acts as the foundation, with Hume at left back and M. Nunes at right back. Hume and M. Nunes can push up to support the attack while the central defenders stay back. Andersen and Ballard provide the core strength, with Andersen being dominant in the air and Ballard acting as a covering defender to sweep behind the line. This unit works to hold a compact shape when the opposition has the ball.
The midfield utilizes a central pairing with a single pivot sitting just ahead of the defense. Ampadu acts as the primary shield for the back four, working to intercept passes and win the ball. Rogers and Lewis-Potter operate as two central midfielders who link the defense to the attack. Rogers drives forward with the ball to create chances, while Lewis-Potter helps to recycle possession. Woltemade plays in the hole as an attacking ten, finding space between the lines to support the strike partnership.
The attacking force consists of two forwards in a partnership. Haaland operates as a primary striker, using his immense strength and movement to pin the last defender and make runs in behind. Calvert-Lewin plays as a target man, looking to win headers and hold up the ball to bring others into play. These two press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. The team uses the wide players and the movement of Woltemade to create cutbacks from the byline and combinations in tight spaces.
This formation offers several tactical advantages. The team creates numerical superiority in the box when the midfielders arrive late into the box. They also possess great speed of transition, allowing them to hit in behind on the transition before the opponent can regroup. The pairing of Haaland and Calvert-Lewin allows the team to stretch the defense both vertically and physically.
The 4-4-2 lineup is a heavy, direct system built to punish teams that leave space behind their midfield. It is best suited for matches against high pressing opponents where the team can exploit space through long balls.
