St. Gallen prefers to play a vertical and direct style of football using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup focuses on being hard to break down while looking to strike quickly through the middle or out wide. The team wants to win the ball back in central areas and push forward with speed to catch the opposition off guard.

Zigi stays between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a central trio made of Magnin, Ambrosius, and Stanic. Magnin acts as the anchor in the center while Ambrosius and Stanic cover the spaces to the left and right. Garcia and Scherrer operate as wing backs, tasked with providing width and pushing high up the pitch during attacks. These wing backs must track back quickly to maintain the five man defensive line when the ball is lost.

The midfield operates as a single pivot with Konietzke sitting in front of the defense to shield the back three. Witzig and Perez play on either side of him to connect the defensive line to the forwards. Konietzke focuses on intercepting passes and breaking the play, while Witzig and Perez drive forward to support the attack. This central trio works to maintain compactness and ensure there is no gap between the defense and the front line.

St. Gallen uses two forwards to lead the line. Fumagalli and Efekele operate as the two strikers, often working together to hold up the ball or run into space behind the defense. The wing backs, Garcia and Scherrer, provide the necessary width to stretch the opposition. By having the two strikers occupy the central defenders, space is created for the midfielders to make runs into the box or for the wing backs to deliver crosses.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Garcia and Scherrer push forward. This forces the opposing wingers to track back and creates numerical advantages in the final third. Another advantage is the defensive solidity provided by the three central defenders, which allows the team to sit deep and stay compact against high pressing sides. This setup makes St. Gallen very difficult to penetrate through the center of the pitch.

This 5-3-2 formation provides a strong foundation for a team that wants to defend deep and strike on the break. It is particularly well suited for facing teams that commit many players forward and leave space behind their defensive line.
